My Law School Journey
I have always have a hard time with traditional word problems. But I have always been a good storyteller. And law, when you boil it down to its most basic ingredients, is about stories (which contain varying amounts of truth). All lawsuits begin with a conversation and in that conversation someone is telling you their story. Your ability to discern relevant facts from that story, figure out how the law applies, and then retell that story in a compelling way are some of the characteristics of all good trial attorneys.
I’m not relying on the vast amount of time I spent watching Forensic Files, Better Call Saul, Suits and Law and Order. I’m sharing my observations and knowledge I’ve gained from my professors during my first year of law school. We studied criminal law, torts and contracts. I’ll be discussing these in ongoing posts as well as strategies that I have developed on how to study for midterms and finals and how to spot issues and remember rule statements. As I mentioned before, I am a photographer and I often remember things that I can put in a visual context. I am also an educator, so I’m familiar with learning strategies and trying to develop ways to help students retain information that I share.
I am not a brilliant legal mind. Nor do I know much yet about the law. But I did pass my first year of law school while working full time as a professional photographer and teaching full time at Chico State University. If I can do it, you can do it.
